Why does the text color change to red and also underlined in microsoft word?

I just opened a simple word document with tables and autoshapes in it. When I opened it the letterhead and autoshapes were missing AND whenever I type the letters are red and underlined. I did not change the font nor underline. How do I get it back to basic black, no underline. I've gone to format and font but it doesn't show that the color has changed and is underlined. Why does the text color change to red and also underlined in microsoft word?
Sounds to me like you've accidentally turned on Track Changes. Try this (for Word XP (2002), 2003 and possibly 2000):

1. Right click on any menu and see if the Reviewing toolbar is checked. If not, I'm done, but if it is ...

2. Deselect it and watch which toolbar disappears, then select it again to bring it back.

3. Hover over each button on the Reviewing toolbar to find the one labeled Track Changes. It's usually near the right end and has a bunch of red lines (surprise!) on a page as its icon.

4. It should look selected. Deselect it.

5. Try adding some text to your document and see if this cured the problem. It should.

6. Now to get rid of the stuff you already have in red. Again on the Reviewing toolbar, find the button that says Accept Changes. It's usually in the middle and has a check mark as its icon.

7. Click the down-arrow for this list box and select Accept All Changes in Document.

You may have to give a Yes or OK click to something, but this should do it.

Good luck. Why does the text color change to red and also underlined in microsoft word?
wow, whoever said it was a spelling error is retarded. the answer about track changes was what it was. I think we understand spell check by this point in our lives

You may have to use reveal code in MS Word to be sure you are acctually unformatting your text. This will reveal all the hidden codes that might have been used either delibrately or my mistake.

You may also put your formating on the tool bar to be sure that the command to change colour and remove underline are acctually being responded to.
your spell check thinks those words are spelled incorrectly, possilbly your dictionary doesn't match that of the person who created the document. Run spell check and ';ignore'; the red item if you feel they are spelled correctly.
What actually happened is that red and underlined text means spelling mistakes. If all your text is underlined, to fix it you have to go to ';Tools%26gt;language'; and change to the proper language so that only the real misspelled words are underlined. FYI, if you ever see green underlines it means grammatical mistakes.

Go to ';File'; and do a ';print preview';, the text should be black and normal to confirm this.
