How do you change the font when typing?

I started typing a paper for school but I was typing it in the wrong font and I was wondering if there was any way I could change the font of the stuff I already typed without starting over. I tried highlighting it but that did'nt really do anything. Does anybody know how to fix this?How do you change the font when typing?
